I was talking with a friend about wagons and their sedan counterparts. This was all brought on by the Subarus. We thought that this was one of the few times the sedan looked better than the Wagon. Maybe its just the jacked up sedan that is somewhat unusual and attractive. I think its the simpler profile of the wagons that typically appeals to me. Obviously wagons are more practice but we were leaving this out of the debate. What do you guys think? Do wagons generally look better or are there sedans you like better?

Wow that fusion wagon is very good looking.

100% wagon for me!

I absolutely despise sedans. Why settle for all the drawbacks of having no utility, when you can have essentially the same vehicle that's way more practical, and looks better. Always the wagon. Always.

I agree that the wagon variants almost always look better than their sedan counterparts, and having the added practicality just makes them that much more attractive.

Wagons FTMFW!

This is an Outback XT, if anybody is wondering. Those wonderful wheel arches are just drop dead sexy, and they're not found on the LGT wagon (RIP)

I'd say the best looking Scoobies are two-door hatches. #TakingAThirdOption

Came here to post something similar...the LGT/OBXT wagon looks sooo much better than the sedan (which looks smaller and chopped off in the back to me).

When I see a clean, nicely dropped OBXT like that sometimes (which isn't very often) I get envious, but I love how rare a true LGT wagon is...esp. with the 5MT, like mine. I alllllmost pulled the trigger on a beautiful mystic blue E46 M3 to replace it recently and just couldn't do it (esp. after just having had it cleaned and fresh summer rubber put on).

I'm going to get flamed for this but I'm calling it out like I see it: this site has a wagon fetish.

Some cars absolutely look better as wagons. Examples: Current gen WRX, the 2 examples you have shown, basically every variant of Ford Focus (actually, the hatch looks better than the wagon but that's semantics). However, there are several cars that look better as sedans. I could name names but I won't bother and simply say that all of the shooting brake photoshops look terrible because it upsets the body lines.

I'm truly envious of you and your unicorn! I've had to look for your exact car for a few friends, but all I could find was either too many miles, or they wanted too much money

I think the Outback sedan looks better than the Wagon. I also have the WRX wagon/hatch so +1 for that.

See we were thinking it was the opposite for the Outback, The sedan is better looking.

I have always liked Subaru's wagons, I think they do a good job with styling. But there are so many wagons out there that look like an afterthought.

We were coming at this from a purely aesthetic stand point. The wagons definitely makes more sense functionally, but we were ignoring that.

I prefer modern variants of wagons over their sedan counterparts, mainly because I'm not a fan of the severely sloping roof/"coupe-like" styling of most modern sedans. Go back a few years, and I tend to prefer the sedan counterpart of most wagons. It seems that as a rule, I like Volvo and Subaru over their sedan equivalent. Audi/BMW, I like in either form, although if a gun were held to my head, I'd go sedan. Mercedes, for the most part, look awkward to my eye.

I do find it interesting that the basic 2 box design gets such love in car form, but is nearly universally despised in SUV/CUV form.

You're right, it changes on a car-to-car basis. But wagons gain the upper hand in spaciousness.

haha, different strokes, I suppose.

I love how the roof line and rear side window swoops down on the legacy/outback wagon (especially with the rear spoiler), and the black wrap-around rear window brings it all together nicely, I think - obviously the added cargo space is awesome too. The sedan...well, just looks like an average sedan to me. Obviously a great car regardless.

And vans gain the upper hand over wagons. I don't have any problem with wagons by themselves. In fact, I used to own a '97 Legacy and I kind of miss it. It was great for hauling around tires, car parts, motorcycle parts, furniture-that-would-fit but now that I have a nicer car, I don't want those things in my nicer car. This is where I fail to see the "utility" of a wagon if you want to keep your nice car nice. Just go on Craigslist and there are a plethora of utility vehicles where you wouldn't feel bad if it got loaded up with tires.

Yup, I had been casually looking for this car for AGES and jumped on it the moment I found one. Prices do seem quite high for these on CL, you're right...I'm curious what they actually sell for though.

Here's my girl the day I got her (she's a tiny bit different now, with OEM amber turn signals up front again) -

Even the outback wagon looks better to the sedan to me.

I really can't think of any sedans off the top of my head that look better than their wagon counterparts..

Kinja'd!!! Stupidru > ZHP Sparky, the 5th

Kinja'd!!!1

Sure! 05s were the only years to have the blacked out headlights. 06 and 07 shared the same style headlights but they were clear. Those 5-spoke wheels were only used on LGTs from 05-06, then were used on all non-GT models in 07,08,and 09. In 07 they went with a 6-spoke wheel for the GT and kept that through 08 and 09. 07 Had the same body style as 05 and 06, but the radio and speedometer had slightly different designs and 07 introduced the SI-Drive. 08 had the model year refresh inside and out, and 09 had a new Harmon-Kardon radio.

Yeah, I'm a bit of a LGT nerd...

Thanks for the info!

Argh bummer, I did try looking for the blacked out headlights when I switched them the other week but were impossible to find...so now I have clear headlights and my car is all wrong and everything is fucked!

Still hate that stupid rock on the freeway that shattered the right lamp, so had to replace both because I couldn't find single units, especially with the clear turn signals. Thanks, Obama!
